ZEF-EHS-IUCN Seminar Series: Land Degradation and Climate Change

November 8, 2017

Vice-chair of the IPCC Youba Sokona was featured among a panel on land degradation focusing on sub-Saharan Africa. The cycle of degradation and migration in the region has led to between $300 billion and $9 trillion USD in economic losses and has left the area vulnerable to food scarcity. Hafdis Aegisdottir, director of the UN University Land Restoration Training program introduced the initiative with a goal to use knowledge sharing to improve agricultural techniques in the region. Claudia Ringler from the IFPRI emphasized the gender component of degradation solutions, and Jones Kharika from the UNCCD connected sustainable land management with UN Global Goals for Sustainable Development. Together, the panel highlighted the need for innovative approaches in addressing food security issues. Watch the session and view the photo gallery.
