La perte et les Dommages

Présidé Par

The FEBA working group on loss and damage (L&D WG), in collaboration with the Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR), aims to address the critical gap in understanding and responding to climate and disaster-related losses of biodiversity and ecosystem services. By convening experts, the group will define and promote the role of ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA) and nature-based solutions (NbS) in addressing these losses, including non-economic dimensions. Recognizing that FEBA’s (Friends of Ecosystem-based Adaptation) EbA work focuses on slow-onset impacts, while PEDRR’s Eco-DRR (ecosystem-based Disaster Risk Reduction) targets sudden-onset events, this joint effort seeks to integrate both perspectives. To avoid duplication, the Joint L&D WG will identify a niche within the broader L&D space (nature focus). Once established, the group will consider ongoing work under the Warsaw International Mechanism (WIM) and align with members’ interests.

Ultimately, the working group will produce knowledge products, policy briefs, and case studies to guide countries in assessing and monitoring losses and utilizing NbS for post-disaster restoration and resilience, thereby fostering the integration of ecosystem-based approaches into loss and damage policy and decision-making.

FEBA is a global network of organizations promoting EbA as a key approach to climate change adaptation. It is coordinated by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and includes NGOs, research institutions, UN agencies, and governments.

PEDRR is a global alliance of UN agencies, NGOs, and academic institutions promoting and scaling up the implementation of Eco-DRR, where partners implement collectively planned initiatives and activities. The Disasters and Conflicts Global Support Branch of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) hosts the PEDRR Secretariat in Geneva.

A joint L&D WG between FEBA and PEDRR will directly build on the experience from a joint FEBA-PEDRR Issue Brief on Loss and Damage and aims to continue the joint knowledge production and advocacy. This working group allows us to capitalize on the diverse expertise of both networks to advance the understanding of loss and damage in the context of ecosystems and elaborate ways to bridge gaps in addressing climate-induced and disaster-related losses through EbA and NbS.
